Recovering The Camera.dat File

In the event that your Video Source Tree appears empty, or that you made changes to your cameras that you wish to revert, you can recover an older version of the list by moving some of ViewCommander's configuration files. Below you will find instructions on how to recover old versions of the camera.dat file for different versions of ViewCommander on different operating systems.

Note: Some computers may be set up to hide file extensions, in which case the file will be listed as simply "camera". You may also see a "camera.dat.bak" file, which is not needed for this process.

ViewCommander Version 4

ViewCommander-NVR V4 saves only one prior version of the camera.dat file. This backup copy is made at most once per day, the first time a change is made to the camera list.

Windows XP & Windows Server 2003

In Windows XP & Server 2003, ViewCommander's config folder is kept in the install directory. If you installed ViewCommander to the default location, you can find the camera.dat file at C:/Program Files/IVI/ViewCommanderV4/config/camera.dat. To recover you camera list, follow these steps:

  1. Shut down ViewCommander
  2. Rename camera.dat. The name you give it doesn't matter, but it should be something clear, like "camera-bad.dat".
  3. Make a copy of camera-old.dat. Rename this copy to "camera.dat".
  4. Restart ViewCommander. It should load up the camera list identified by the file you renamed "camera.dat". If it did, it is safe to delete the "camera-bad.dat" file.

Windows 7 & Windows Server 2008

On computers running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, the config folder is kept in the hidden "Program Data" folder. The easiest way to access this folder is to open up "Computer" and type "C:/programdata" into the address bar at the top of the window (without quotes). Camera.dat should be at the location "C:/programdata/ViewCommander/config/camera.dat". To restore your backed up camera list, do the following:

ViewCommander Version 5

ViewCommander-NVR V5 maintains many backup copies of the camera.dat file, one for each day on which changes were made. Like Version 4, Version 5 creates a backup the first time a change is made to the camera list each day. The backups are kept in a folder called backup, and are named in the style "camera-yyyymmdd.dat" where yyyy is the year, mm the month and dd the day on which the backup was saved.

Windows XP & Windows Server 2003

Windows XP & Server 2003 store the config folder in the directory where ViewCommander is installed. If you used the default install location, the camera.dat file can be found at "C:/program files/IVI/ViewCommanderV5/config/camera.dat". Use the following steps to restore your camera list:

  1. Shut down ViewCommander
  2. In the config folder, rename camera.dat. The name you give it doesn't matter, but it should be something clear, like "camera-bad.dat".
  3. Copy one of the files from the backup folder. It's recommended that you start with the most recent one, and work your way backwards if necessary.
  4. Paste the backup into the config folder. Rename it "camera.dat", without quotes.
  5. Restart ViewCommander. It should load up the camera list identified by the file you renamed "camera.dat".
    • If it did, it is safe to delete the "camera-bad.dat" file.
    • If the camera list is still incorrect, repeat the process from step 3 with the next most recent backup file.
